The 4th European Symposium on Ultrasonic Characterization of Bone (ESUCB 2011) was organized at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, jointly by the Department of Physics and Department of Health Sciences. The Symposium was a continuation of three previous meetings, initially organized by the French-German network on ultrasound assessment of bone strength from the tissue to the organ level. The European dimension of this symposium is extended for researchers, students and exhibitors from Asia and America. During the 2-day symposium the cutting edge in ultrasonic assessment was be presented in oral and poster sessions. The meeting addressed the latest advances in basic science (ultrasound propagation models, non linear acoustics, backscattering, numerical simulations, guided waves), instrumentation and signal analysis (acoustic microscopy, transverse and axial transmission, imaging techniques) and applications (small animals, osteoporosis and other diseases).
